Why Portobello FC?
Why not North Kensington United, or Notting Hill FC?
Why Portobello FC? That is a very easy question for me to answer. Portobello Road is the place I call home.
Having lived a stones throw away from Portobello Road for pretty much the entirety of my life, it can be very easy to overlook how special this place actually is. When I decided to start a football club, Portobello FC was the first name that sprung to my mind and from this point on I started having a greater appreciation for the area that I was fortunate enough to call home.
Portobello Road is a place of colour, culture, and creativity. It has a world-famous market that attracts visitors in the tens of thousands each and every weekend. It was also the backdrop to the 1999 BAFTA-winning RomCom, Notting Hill, starring Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts. Every year, Europe’s largest street festival, the Notting Hill Carnival, also takes place on Portobello Road. With bands like The Clash and Aswad forming in the area - Portobello has always been a hub for creatives.
In football, as in all businesses, having a strong brand is incredibly important. The ‘Portobello brand’ exists. Other businesses such as Portobello Road Gin and the Portobello Brewing Co. have already leveraged the brand successfully. From a branding and marketing perspective, I knew Portobello FC had potential - especially if I was able to successfully communicate the true identity of Portobello Road and the local community in Notting Hill and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.
